History of the college
The John Fletcher College-Kenya was born in a prayer group made up of members of the Cornerstone United Methodist Church in Caledonia, MI. The group consisted of Christian leaders from the USA, Pakistan, and Kenya. There were five former church ministers in that group. Three retired and two just tired because of unpleasant circumstances in their lives. In one of the group discussions, a critical question was posed to these two church ministers. The question was "Why are you NOT in the ministry?". This question stirred up a lot of soul-searching and prayers. These ministers reflected on a lot of things. They looked at the Word of God and saw the major battles that the "Generals" of the Lord fought with the enemies of God's people. Many of the "Generals" were wounded. BUT...they did not surrender and leave the troops alone. Job fought on despite the viscious attacks of the enemy. David fought to the end. Paul endured to the end of his life in service to Jesus Christ. The trials and tribulations that Paul faced in his ministry brought about a sense of contentment. Contentment was not happiness; it was satisfaction and he learned to be satisfied no matter what the circumstances. Wounds can come from a variety of sources, including the devil, his forces and people....even within the church! After searching their souls and praying for God's leading, members of the Bible study group became convinced that the Lord was leading them to get back into the ministry and use their God-given gifts to help in the building of the Kingdom of God by establishing a training program to equip ministers in East Africa. They formed a ministry called Redeeming Grace Ministries International. A board was constituted with Rev. Rick DeGroot as the President. It is in one of the board meetings, after careful prayer and study, that a decision was made to name the college that was going to be established in Kenya with satelite campuses in Uganda and Tanzania, after John William Fletcher, a contemporary of John Wesley, a key interpreter of Wesleyan theology in the 18th century, and one of Methodism's first great theologians.
